Department of Pharmacognosy

PHCG 2301 Pharmaceutical Botany 3 C.H

The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of Morphology and taxonomy of plant kingdom: phylogenetic development of plants, subdivision of the plant kingdom, morphology, taxonomic and phytochemical characteristics of lower plants, morphology, taxonomic and phytochemical characteristics of higher plants.



PHCG 2102 Pharmaceutical Botany Lab. 1C.H

This practical course provides the student with the skills of Morphological partial microscopic preparations (plant cell, plant tissues, anatomy of the root, anatomy of the stem, anatomy of the leaf and their macroscopical characters and herbarium identification.



PHCG 3304 Pharmacognosy 3C.H Pharmaceutical Botany

This course represents an introduction in Analytical Pharmacognosy: traditional medicine, processing of vegetal product, correlation structure activity relationship, Chemotaxonomy, plant analysis, general biosynthesis and biotechnology. It includes also study of primary metabolites as carbohydrates: Monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Amino acids: Non-proteins amino acids, Cyanogenic glycosides, Glucosinolates, and Immunomudolatory from vegetal origin.



PHCG 3105 Pharmacognosy Lab. 1C.H Pharmacognosy

This practical course provides the student with the skills of Microscopical characters of all vegetal organs (Radix, Cortex, Folium, Fructus, Semen and Herbs).

PHCG3208 Phytochemistry (1) 2 C.H Pharmacognosy

This course deals with secondary metabolites of vegetal products. It includes methodology of plant extraction, separation and isolation of active ingredients. It includes also study of phenolic compounds: Generalities, Biogenetics of main groups, Tannins, flavonoids, coumarins, lignane, phenylpropanoids, and anthraquinone. Also discuss the antibiotics and toxins serving as a continuation of pharmaceutical botany.



PHCG 4209 Phytochemistry 2 2C.H Phytochemistry 1

This course serves as a continuation of Phytochemistry 1 and it deals with the study of Terpenoids: Biogenetic generalities, Monoterpenes, Sesquiterpenes, Essential oils, Oleoresins, Iridoids, Diterpenes, Triterpenes and Steroids. Saponins, Cardiac Glycosides, Carotenoids. Biotechnology that is related with these subjects.



PHCG 4110 Phytochemistry Lab. 1 1C.H

This practical course includes the study of identification of the main groups of active principles (Qualitative analysis), Extraction, Chromatography, Isolation, and Purification.



PHCG 4211 Phytochemistry 3 2 C.H Phytochemistry 2

This course serves as a continuation of Phytochemistry 2 and it deals with the study of Nitrogen compounds: Biogenetic Generalities, alkaloids derived from ornithine, lysine, nicotinic acid, phenylalanine, tryptophan, anthranilic acid, histidine, terpenoid alkaloids, alkaloids with miscellaneous structures and purine alkaloids. This course also discusses in details narcotics and substance abuse from natural origin.



PHCG 4112 Phytochemistry Lab. 2 1C.H

This practical course is a continuation of Phytochemistry Lab. 1 and it includes Quantitative analysis of active ingredients, thin layer and column chromatography determination and formulation of active chemical natural groups: Carbohydrates, Phenolic compounds, Terpenoids and Alkaloids.



PHCG 5213 Phytotherapy 2C.H Phytochemistry 3

This course is made out of two major parts: The first part is concern with the effects of Placebo in medical therapy, traditional medicine-modern medicine relationship, Herbal toxicity, Homeopathy and Aromatherapy. The second part related to methodology of treatment by herbs and nutrients for chronic disease and other maladies in our country.
