Count and Noncount Nouns
Count Nouns
are things that be counted as one, two, three , and so on. These nouns have singular and plural forms.
A Count Noun 1- may preceded by a / an in the singular ......
e.g: Hani has a nice dog
2- It takes a final -s/-es in the plural .....e.g: Many hands spoil the cooking
Note :We use a , an , a few , many with the count nouns
Nouncount Nouns
Nouns that can't be enumerated ( counted)
A nouncount noun : 1- is not immediately preceded by a/an
2- has no plural form , so doesn't take a final -s/-es
Note: We use much / a little with the noncount nouns
e.g: He has a little money
We bought some furniture
Incorrect : a furniture / furnitures
This list is a sample of nouns that are commonly used as noncount nouns :
1- Whole groups made up of similar items : equipment , food , fruit , furniture , jewelry , scenery , ...... etc
For example : I bought some chairs , tables , and desks . In other words , I bought some furniture
In the above example "furniture" represents a whole group of things that is made up of similar but seperate items
2- Fluids : water , coffee, tea , oil ........ etc
3-Solids : ice , bread , butter , glass ..... etc
4- Gases : steam , air , oxygen .... etc
5- Particles : rice , chalk , salt , sugar .... etc
6- Abstractions: beauty , courage , happiness , help , knowledge , information , luck ...... etc
7- Languages : Arabic , English ....... etc
8- Fileds of study : chemistry , history , mathmatics
9- Recreation : baseball , tennis....... etc
10- Activities : driving : studying , swimming ..... etc
11- Natural Phenomena : weather , fog , heat , sunshine ..... etc
Note : Some of these words ,e.g: glass , paper, stone, ...etc , can be countable in one context and, with a different meaning , uncountable in another:
A glass (countable ) is made of glass ( Uncountable)
You can throw a stone ( countable) at a wall made of stone (Uncountable)
