Introduction
A second language
It is one which has some specific functions within a society and which is learned after the mother tongue.
A foreign language
It is one which has no internal function in the learner's country and which is learnt in order to communicate with native speakers or interlanguage users of the foreign language.
The Need for Learning/Teaching English in Palestine
1- English is one of the international languages.
2- English is one of the languages of advanced sciences.
3- It is one of the languages needed to run a first-class business.
4- It is needed by students traveling abroad to start or continue their university learning.
5- It is needed for economic, political, and historical reasons.
6- It enables students to communicate with foreign people.
A Good Teacher
1- makes purpose and content explicit,
2- plans carefully,
3- uses systematic assessment and feedback,
4- encourages children to think about thinking,
5- has a good appearance,
6- be able to use instructional aids,
7- uses recent teaching methods,
8- uses simple language,
9- uses stories, songs, and games in teaching English,
10- good command of vocabulary and structure,
11- should master the four language skills,
12- has a correct pronunciation, and
13- should be endowed with the capacity to teach.
Young Learner's Characteristics
1- are already very good at interpreting meaning without necessarily understanding the individual words,
2- already have great skill in using limited language creatively,
3- frequently learn indirectly rather than directly,
4- take great pleasure in finding and creating fun in what they do,
5- have a great imagination,
6- take great delight in talking.
7- begin to be logical and analytical,
8- ask questions,
9- reading and writing skills minimal in L1,
10- still have problems sharing,
11- develop confidence to express themselves, &
12- develop knowledge of the world around them.
